Pharaoh Merneptah campaigned in Canaan ca. 1207 BCE and commissioned this large monument to brag about his victories. In addition to destroying fortified cities such as Ashkelon and Gezer, Merneptah bragged "Israel is laid waste, its seed is not." This was the first historical reference to Israel outside of the Bible, and moreover, unlike settled city-states, Israel is prefaced by a determinative meaning unsettled people. This suggests Israel was seminomadic at this time.
The stele was discovered in 1896 CE at Thebes by Flinders Petrie, and currently resides in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.
