Thirteen ancient codices containing more than 50 texts were found near Nag Hammadi in 1945 when two Egyptian peasants were collecting fertilizer. Some of the texts are Gnostic scriptures written in Greek that date to ca. 200 CE. Gnostics, unlike Orthodox Christians, believed that God gave secret knowledge to practitioners. Gnostic also diminished the role of the priesthood as intermediaries between God and humans. The most famous text from Nag Hammadi is the Gospel of Thomas. This was a collection of sayings, parables, and prophecies attributed to Jesus and written down by Judas Thomas, whom some Gnostics believed to be Jesus' twin brother.
