Pilate Inscription

Pilate Inscription

Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor who oversaw Jesus' crucifixion, dedicated a building in Caesarea to the Emperor Tiberius as recorded on this monumental Latin inscription that reads:

TIBERIEUM
[PON]TIUS
[PRAEF]ECTUS IUDA[EAE]

This is the only known reference to Pontius Pilate from an ancient inscription. It was discovered in 1961 by Italian archaeologists, who found it in secondary usage in a theater. A copy resides in Caesarea, though the original is located in the Israel Museum in Jerusalem.
