Taking Care of Torah
Due to flooding in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, the Beth Israel Synagogue on Canal Blvd had 8 feet of water and the Torah scrolls were in danger of being desecrated. Becky Heggelund, a Christian woman who worked at Beth Israel for a few years back in the 1990’s, helped out by burying the seven Torah scrolls in her backyard according to Bruce Nolan.
